4G high-speed internet in Chennai

Chennai city will soon get 4G internet service from telecom service providers like Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJI). With this, the Chennai Corporation is likely to generate more money as track rent.
These telecom service providers need to lay optical fiber cable network across places in the city for providing high speed internet connection. It is to be noted that the state government gave its nod to increase underground and aerial cable rent from Rs 9400 to Rs 32,450 per km for a year. The approval was given last year. The civic body has also made decision to increase the track rent by 10 per cent every year. To note, there has been no increase in track rent since 2000.
The city has over 15,645 cables and fibre optic networks are installed by the 17 telephone and high speed internet service providers. This counts to 4,124.87 km length. The civic body got a collection of Rs 3.41 crore as rent in the year 2014-15.
