Fruits to be avoided by diabetics!

It is better for the diabetics to keep a watch on the fruits taken by them. Even though fruits are generally good for health, they sometimes become harmful for the diabetic patients.

Each fruit has different capacity to change the sugar level in the blood of the diabetic. As a precaution, it is advisable to avoid some fruits. This is because some fruits can rise the sugar level in the blood very quickly.

Fruits have been categorised according to their sugar content. They have been given Glycemic Number (GI). It is better to take them or leave after knowing the GI number.

Diabetics can take fruits which have low Glycemic Number, - 55 or less. As apple and pear contain less carbohydrate, diabetics can eat them.

Mango – Known as the king of fruits, mango contains very high level of sugar. Hence, diabetics should avoid it. Taking it will increase the sugar blood level.

Sapodilla (Chikoo or sapota) – GI number is mopre than 55. It should be avoided. It is rich in both sugar & carbohydrate.

Grapes – While grape contains fibre and other nutrients, it is also rich in sugar. Diabetics should avoid grapes. 100 gm of grapes contain 15 gm of carbohydrate.

Banana – Half a cup of banana fruit contains 15 gm carbohydrate. Gi number is between 46 & 70. Diabetics have to avoid bananas.
 
Watermelon – GI number is 72. It contains less fibre and less calories. It is rich in vitamins A & C. Half-a-cup of watermelon contains 15 gm carbohydrate.

Pineapple – Should be avoided by diabetics. A small cup of 
pineapple contains more than 20 gm of carbohydrate.

Custard apple (Seetha fruit) – This is rich in vitamin C, Calcium, iron, and fibre. However, the sugar level is high. 100 gm of custard apple contains more than 23 gm of carbohydrate.

Cashew fruit – Diabetics must avoid this. Gi number is 103. A quarter of this fruit contains 24 gm carbohydrate.
