Posted on: 15/Jul/2014 10:57:36 AM
Starting from next week, the Kudankulam Nuclear Power plant unit-1 will be shut down for yearly maintenance.

The unit-1 of Kudankulam power plant has been producing 950 MW power incessantly for more than a month, will be not working for about a month. Once it restarts, this unit will be functioned properly and the generated power will be employed by the NPCIL, so as to charge the states.

The unit-1 has been functioning since October 2013; the generated power has been harmonized with the grid. We ought to shut down the power generators for maintenance annually and for this year, the maintenance starts from upcoming week, says Kudankulam site director.

For more than a week time, this unit-1 has been producing the power of its full capacity around 1000MW. Hence the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AREB) had given consent to cut down the generation within 900MW for the formal commissioning of the plant, he added.

After the maintenance, the states which utilize the power from the unit-1 ought to follow the new payment agreement. Till now, the states are exploiting the infirm power where they need to pay Rs.1 per unit.

The power generated from unit-1 has been shared between Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Karnataka.

Even though Tamil Nadu lacks 450 MW power from next week, the power demand can be managed by wind power till September and there wont be any problem concerning power supply, said a TNEB official.
