First unit of Kudankulam to begin its commercial operation soon

Sources from Kudankulam nuclear power plant say the first unit of the plant may go commercial in another few months. The plant is currently being tested for effective functioning. Speaking to Mr. R.S.Sundar, the project site director, he says there were troubles in functioning of the turbine engine in the earlier stage. This however is rectified and the generation process need not be stopped for any reason even if the reactor reaches its full capacity. He also added that first unit of the plant is now operational.

It is said the test may take up to 15 days for completion further to which the test results will be submitted to the regulator (AERB) for clearance of commercial operations. This will be the final stage upon which the reactor would go commercial in a few months.

For a question raised about statements of anti-KKNP activists who want the plants to be refrained from commercial operations, he said there wouldn’t be any hindrances in operations of the first two reactors as those were installed before the approval of civil liability nuclear damage act in 2010.
