In an aim to comfort disposal of waste materials in tourist spots, the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation has come up with plans to implement underground bins at eleven tourist spots including Mamallapuram, Kanyakumari, Velankanni, Rameswaram and Madurai. The system will soon be implemented at a cost of over Rs 5 crore. Over 275 deep-earth pits will be dug across these tourist spots in another few months. Speaking to one of the TTDC officials, he says a company in Finland has shown interest in this project.

Details about the underground bin:
The bins are planned to be of 9 feet depth and will be 6 feet underground. It will have a capacity of over 2 to 3 tonnes. Once these get filled, cranes will be used to empty them. It is said that over 20 to 25 such bins will be set up in all places and Madurai alone may have at least 50.
