Increasing abortion in Chennai; decline in child sex ratio

Posted on: 10/Jun/2014 5:18:11 PM
A significant decline of child sex ratio is observed in Chennai in the recent years. It was 972 girls per 1000 boys in 2001 which then came down to 950 girls per 1000 boys in 2011. The underlying reason is obviously sensed as the increase in number of medically terminated pregnancies (MTP) in public hospitals and clinics that are registered with the corporation, says data from civic body.

It is furthermore said that the count of illegal or unregistered abortions may be even more. According to reports from Chennai Corporation, abortion rate is increased from 10291 in 2010-11 to 12578 in 2012-13. Most of the abortion cases are observed to be aimed at preventing the mental or physical health of women. Additionally, failure of contraceptive measures, forced pregnancies through rape or unplanned or unwanted pregnancies are other underlying reasons for the increase in medically terminated pregnancies (MTP) say sources.
