Heavy rain lashes in some parts of Chennai

Chennaites were up to a surprise when they saw there was rain in their city. There was also strong winds , thunder and lightning. The regional meteorological centre at Nungambakkam recorded 36.2mm of rains till 8:30am while the Meenambakkam received 49.4mm of rains till 5:30am.
The rains were not due to the southwest monsoon that set in Kerala on Friday but due to convective activity due to the heat. But this was not localized. It rained in north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh over an area of more than 100 sqkm.
The meteorological department forecasts the maximum temperature in the city will hover around 36 degrees Celsius, till Wednesday.
