Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital has been recognized as a Centre of Excellence for upper gastro-intestinal surgery

Based on the performance report of the department for the years 2008-2013, the department of surgical gastroenterology in Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital has been recognised as a `Centre of Excellence for upper gastro-intestinal surgery`.
The director of medical education (DME) made a recommendation to the state government based on a proposal received from the dean, Madras Medical College. The proposal also suggested upgrading one post of professor into director and has requested the government to issue necessary orders.
The DME has also stated that the additional expenditure involved in upgrading the department will be met out from the chief minister`s comprehensive health insurance scheme.
Through this step, the department will continue to cater to poor patients, while advancing its research.
