Posted on: 06/Jun/2014 3:30:24 PM
The slum clearance board has decided to build free houses for all hut dwellers in leased lands or lands without any valid claimants. This scheme is introduced for the first time in entire India.

Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission, operating under the Central Government Urban Development Board, was formed in 2005 for the improvement of cities in India.

A project aiming for ‘removal of all huts’ in all major cities has been taken up by this board. The slum clearance board will build free houses for the hut dwellers in leased lands. The area of the house will be 350 sq ft. It will be built at a cost of Rs. 5 Lakhs. 50% of this cost will be borne by the central government. 40% will be borne by the state government. The balance 10%, or Rs. 50000/- will have to be paid by the user.

A discussion on this project was conducted at Rajendra Nagar, Neelankarai, yesterday (5th June).

Slum Clearance Board officials explained about the scheme. Similar meeting were conducted earlier in Ponniyamman Koil Street, Injambakkam and Kudimiyandithoppu, Panaiyur.

Cetnral government had introduced the plan called ‘Valmiki Ambedkar Awaaz Yojana’ for removal of huts. However, it was not a success. Even the scheme for loan facility to build houses on leased lands was not successful.

As a result, the authorities have planned to build free houses lands without any claimants to remove the huts and build concrete houses. The first stage will be in the city of Chennai at Sholinganallur.

A survey was conducted in 15 regions in Chennai for this project. It was found the 15th region had the maximum of 39 slum/hut dwelling areas.10,000 huts were eithr huts or huts with asbestos roofs. The people living in these leased lands and interested in getting the free house should submit a letter to the government. If the land is on a leasable basis, even those who applied for lease deed can also apply.

A detailed repot on the project will be submitted by the Slum Clearance Board to the state government. The details about funds will be known only later.
