Illicit Business of Birds & Animals – Flags Weekly Pet Bazaar in Chennai

The weekly pet bazaar at Maskan Chavady in Broadway, Chennai is the place where birds and animals, frequently smuggled, dishonorably bred and sneaked have been put on view for customers.
Vendors drag their birds and animals from baskets, cartons and gunny bags. Pigeons and Rabbits are disentangled from bags pierced with openings to facilitate oxygen.
Love birds have been kept in undersized cages and pups were placed in large ones. The rabbits placed in the card board containers stare their red eyes gleaming like ashes in the early first light.
The circumstances in which all the creatures have been kept are heart pulling. Only few creatures are getting sold legally, but most of the cases it is not.
The hawkers need to get the license from the Chennai Corporation, before leading a pet shop. Individuals who hawks pets on the road side is illicit, said Muralidharan, animal protestor.
Most pet markets vend illegal foreign bird’s namely African parrots, Australian lovebirds, and finches. More than 1,200 species of aboriginal birds have been seized and their trades were blocked by the Wildlife Protection Act. Nearly 300 varieties are explicitly sold. Most common birds that are visible in the market are Mynas and parrots, says sources of PETA India.
Vendors who color animals and place them in confined places should be penalized under the ‘Preclusion of Brutality to Animals’ Act.
