Modernization of Chennai Airport – Acquires Marginal New Travelers!

Posted on: 02/Jun/2014 6:50:13 PM
Chennai Airport modernization work has been carried out recently at a cost of Rs. 2,000 Crores. Inspite of its tremendous features, it welcomed a trivial passenger crowd among airports across the country.

As per the statistics, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) reveals that, Chennai airport (both the domestic and international) receives a marginal growth of only 0.9% during 2013-2014.  Comparatively other airports receives more passenger percentage which include Bangalore (7.3%), Delhi(7.3%), Mumbai(6.7%), Kochi(10%) and Hyderabad(4.3%).

Since more people are opting for other airports namely Bangalore, Kochi and Hyderabad, Chennai airport is losing out its scope.

Cargo traffic has also been descended at Chennai airport with trades more and more preferring the Bangalore airport for its better quality amenities and competence of benefits.

The domino effect of the airport`s deprived performance is already obvious. AirAsia India, a budget airline made it apparent even previous to it is planned to initiate services on 12 June which it is probable to shift its head office from Chennai to Bangalore once the prospect grants itself.

This is the transparent indication that Chennai airport is not functioning properly, said Sudhakara Reddy, president of Air Passengers Association of India.

It is baffling that Chennai`s trade and business growth has not show the way to a parallel enlargement in airport commuter traffic.
