As there was shortage of rain, rice growth has been affected in Karnataka. Hence, the rice quantity that is transported to Salem has reduced by 50%. This has led to increase in price.

The wholesale rice merchants at Sevvaippettai, Salem informed:

Rice growth in Tamil Nadu also has reduced. Up to recent times, this was offset by good rice harvest in Karnataka from where it was transported to Salem. So, the position was satisfactory during February, March, and April. However, Karnataka experienced rain shortage resulting in less rice growth. Hence, the quantity transported to Salem has reduced. From the usual quantity of 1000 bags, it has reduced to 500 bags.

The price of Ponni rice was Rs. 4,200 per 100 kg till 20 days ago. Yesterday, the price has gone up to Rs. 4,600 or Rs. 4,800/-. PPT Ponni Rice price has gone up from Rs. 3,800/- to Rs. 4,200/-.
