An Infrared-Based Sensor Technology – Awaits in Indian Railways

Posted on: 28/May/2014 2:41:25 PM
Advancements in the field of both the traveller amenities and in course of the interior functioning system will always enter in a slow pace in Indian Railways.

In railways, still the overhead line assessment division majorly involves large manual labour and also highly time-consuming process.

The precision electric line sways the Electrical Multiple Units (EMUs) via the pantograph, a tool scaled on top of the motor to transmit electricity. An inspection will be carried out by the railways, to gauge the grade amid the pantograph and the overhead cable to avoid shattering of the overhead channel.

To reduce the human intervention, a team of IIT-Madras students have created an infrared-stand depth sensor tool so as to bring in automation in the operation of the overhead electric line checking system.

This equipment has been framed by Hyper Verge in relationship along with the Computer Vision Team and IIT-Madras.

In this new innovation, a camera has been fitted ahead the pantograph, says Kedar Kulkarni, the head of innovation team.

This tool will be linked to the computer to process the raw information from the overhead electric channel and in turn the processed info will be stockpile on the cloud.

The biggest benefit is that the equipment can spot danger precincts where the overhead channel wants unique notice that generally run off for the human eye.
