Energy meters shortage in Chennai suburban areas

Posted on: 27/May/2014 3:37:20 PM
Announced and unannounced power-cuts are in vogue in several areas in Tamil Nadu. Even though the electricity charges have gone up several times, the public asking for new connections & paid for the same and the entrepreneurs planning to start new business requiring power are waiting for several months for power connection. This delays the starting of the new business venture. Similarly, the public who want to move into their new houses are kept waiting.

There has been an acute shortage of energy meters. The government allowed to purchase energy meters from private shops or agencies. The EB authorities will check & seal these meters while giving the power connection. However, the permission to buy energy meters from outside has been withdrawn now.

There are more than 1000 customers in suburban areas of Chennai city waiting for the energy meters for more than a month. They have appealed to the state government and the Electricity Board to act jointly to make energy meters easily available.

It is understood that there is acute shortage of energy meters, especially, the single-phase energy meter. Quick action could not be taken because of the recent election activities. Now that the elections are over, the action to make energy meters available is being expedited.
