Justice Kaul appointed as new Chief Justice of Madras High Court

After nearly four months, the Madras high court is all set to get a full-fledged chief justice soon with the Supreme Court clearing the name of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul for the post. He is at present Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana high court. Since February 13, the Madras HC is headed by acting Chief Justice Satish K Agnihotri.
 
Born on December 26, 1958, Justice Kaul obtained his law degree from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University in 1982.During his 19-year-long practice, he handled mainly commercial, civil and writ matters in the Delhi high court and the Supreme Court.
 
Justice Kaul was appointed additional judge of the Delhi high court on May 3, 2001 and was made a permanent judge in 2003. He functioned as acting Chief Justice of the Delhi HC for a brief period in September 2012 before his elevation as Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana high court on June 1, 2013. Theatre, music, golf and reading, including subjects unrelated to law, are stated to be his other interests. Justice Kaul is a member of various prestigious institutions and clubs like India International Centre, India Habitat Centre, Indian Law Institute, Delhi Golf Club, Delhi Gymkhana Club and Roshanara Club.
 
Justice Kaul has been invitee to a number of national and international seminars and workshops, and presented a number of papers. As a judge he has presided over most jurisdictions and contributed to development of law through various pronouncements.
