Reclaiming Beaches – Plan for more Toilets!

For the past few years, Chennai Corporation receives so many complaints concerning the dirty beaches. Finally now, the city corporation, slum residents, food retailers and NGOs are knuckle down to roll up together in an attempt to regain beaches.

In the first phase of work, the corporation plans to construct two toilets for slum residents in Urur Olcott Kuppam close to Elliot`s Beach, Besant Nagar.  Also a staff representative of the NGO has been appointed for charge of its protection.

Corporation has also planned of framing a cooperative society in order to control vendors and dealers and placing warning boards compelling public not to drop litter beaches.  

In later point of time, similar measures will extend to the beaches and slum areas in Thiruvanmayur, Palavakkam and Kottivakkam.

For persistent cleanliness, we wish for the role of private players to preserve beaches and buttress us in inspiring beach users to maintain beaches hygienic, said a corporation official.

Both the populace of Urur Kuppam and Besant Nagar has decided to the take part in the drive which will escort to Elliot’s beach being affirmed a ‘No Litter Precinct’.

Also we planned to providing drinking water taps in the beach, hence we can prevent plastic water bottles lying down the beach, said Kamakshi Subramanian, co-founder of ‘Spark ‘, a Besant Nagar-founded civic medium.
