Chennaites of South Chennai were seen running out of their houses on Wednesday night because of mild tremors. The earthquake of magnitude 6 on the Ritcher scale occurred in the Bay of Bengal, off Paradip coast. The government has not issued a tsunami warning. The IMD website said the quake, which was felt in a few parts of the country, occurred around 9.51pm and lasted a few seconds.
The epicentre of the quake was at latitude 18.3� north and 87.9� east, according to the IMD seismic unit.
The meteorological department said the quake occurred at a depth of 10km underwater, while international sites, includ ing the US Geological Survey, said the depth could be up to 40km.
Residents in some areas, particularly in highrise buildings in parts of Velachery , Gill Nagar, Adyar, Triplicane, T Nagar and Thiruvanmiyur, came out of their homes after they felt the tremors. Several residents took to social networking sites within seconds and updated their pages with posts about the tremors.
There were no immediate reports of damage to property or loss of life.
