MRTS service to connect Velachery and St. Thomas mount soon

The work to construct MRTS railway track between Velachery and St. Thomas mount was kept idle since long time. But now, steps to acquire land of 7000 square meters for constructing St. Thomas Mount to Velachery MRTS train track is restarted by the department officials.

Plans were made to set up a flying train system between Chennai beach and St. Thomas mount in 1975. This was initiated with the MRTS service between Mylapore and Chennai beach, covering 8.7 km distance at a cost of Rs 307 crore. The service then commenced in the year 1997. Further to this, in the year 2007, Mylapore was connected with Velachery by this MRTS system.

Now, the third phase of the plan is set to commence by connecting Velachery and St. Thomas mount both of which are at 5 km distance. This is expected to happen at a cost of Rs 495 crore. As of now, the railway track is constructed with 167 pillars for a distance of 4.5 km. This however had troubles in furthermore construction works as it required demolishment of 27 houses and buildings in Adambakkam, Thillai Ganga nagar and few other areas.

People residing in these 27 houses appealed to the high court and hence there was a delay in MRTS construction between St.thomas mount and Velachery which was actually scheduled for completion in 2012. However, the high court gave a judgment in favor of railway department with which the department is now free to continue with its MRTS construction work.
