Tender coconut & lemon prices rise due to severe summer!

The prices of tender coconut and lemon, the two important thirst quenching items have increased due to the severe summer.
This year, summer has been more severe throughout Tamil Nadu. The last few days in Chennai have been really scorching!
The public resort to taking tender coconut to quench their thirst and to keep the body cool. They also buy lemon for making refreshing juice.
A great deal of reduction of arrival of lemon (quantity) from other places and the scorching summer are the reasons for the price rise.
Most of the tender coconuts sold in Chennai are brought from Pollachi, Thirupachi, Puducherry, and Salem (comparatively less quantity).
Pollachi tender coconuts are large in size containing more water and very tasty. Thirupachi tender coconuts are medium in size. Puducherry tender coconuts are small.
Usually, the prices tend to rise during every April & May. However, this year, the prices rose from March itself. It has risen further and is expected to rise even more in the coming days.
Price of tender coconuts
- Pollachi ΰ Large Rs. 45 as compared to the usual Rs. 35. Small Rs. 35 as compared to Rs. 30/-.
- Thirupachi ΰ Large Rs, 35 (30). Small Rs. 30 (25)
- Puducherry ΰ Large Rs. 25 (20). Small Rs. 20 (15)
Price of lemon
Lemons are brought to Koyambedu mostly from Gudur, Ganigiri, Rajampetttai, and Kodur from Andhra Pradesh. The yield of leon in these places becomes lower during the months of April & May. Only 3 to 4 loads of lemon are brought as against the usual 5 to 8 loads.
As the lemon produce from the Tamil Nadu regions of Pulitangudi & Sankarankoil are sold at Trichy, Madurai, and Ottanchathiram, only very less quantity is brought to Koyambedu.
However, this years summer being very severe the sales of lemon to the public as well as juice shops have increased. Hence, there is a great increase in demand. This increase in demand coupled with the reduction in the quantity of lemon arriving in Channai has resulted in great increase in prices. This is expected to last till the endof summer.
