Tamil Nadu government planning to raise Electricity Bill Charges?

Posted on: 28/Apr/2014 9:55:18 AM
As Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has been functioning under loss over the last few years, Tamil Nadu Government is examining the possibilities of increasing the Electricity charges again.

The state has been facing a severe power shortage over the last 2 years and forced to shut down power for restricted periods daily 2 hours in Chennai & a maximum of 10 hours in other districts.

Election having been conducted, power cut is enforced again in all districts except Chennai.

As per the government reports, the loss is over Rs. 1000 Crores. In order to meet the power demand, power is being procured from private companies at a high price. This has increased the losses further.

Considering the above losses, the issue of increasing EB charges is examined. The suggested rate increase will be handed over to Electricity Board by the1st week of May. Feedback on the proposal will be taken through conducting several forums across the state.

The increase is expected to be a minimum of  50 Paise to Rs. 1/- per unit. This may be effective from June.

The last raise in charges was on 1st April, 2012. The first 100 units are charged at Rs. 1/-per unit. From 101 to 200 units, it is Rs. 1.50 per unit. From 201 to 500 units, it is Rs.4/- per unit. From 501 units, it is Rs.5.75 per unit. For usage of 300 units and below, there is a surcharge of Rs.20/-. For usage of above 200 units, the surcharge is Rs.40/-.
