Supreme Courts third gender orders

Posted on: 16/Apr/2014 12:00:52 PM
The Supreme Court has passed order that transgenders should be given ‘third gender’ status. This is cheerful news to them.

Members of the community in the state, which set up a welfare board for transgenders in 2008, now hope Tamil Nadu will also be the forerunner in implementing the apex court order. Transgenders in the state are provided ration cards, land deeds and subsidy for sex-change operations.

Transgenders’ collectives in Chennai hope the order would gradually bring about a social change, helping them live a better and dignified life.

On Tuesday, several members of the community celebrated the verdict at the office of Sahodaran, a collective of transgenders, by cutting a cake. Chennai has more than 1,000 transgenders, most of whom are forced to do sex work, say activists working in the field.
