Power substations for metro trains

Posted on: 15/Apr/2014 6:00:22 PM
As earlier said, the metro rail is getting set to commence its service between Koyambedu and Alandur. And now, the corporation has now come up with ideas to set series of sub-stations for power supply to trains. For the train to run between Koyambedu and Ashok Nagar, a supply of 25kv is required. These trains will need 70 MW power to function with lighting and air conditioning.

For all these needs, auxiliary substations and network of substations are to be constructed for feeding power to the metro rail’s overhead power cables and its respective stations. The power generation will follow braking action and this will be supplied for air conditioning and lighting needs. This in turn will reduce the overall supply of power for the train.

While the trains will need 25kv power for traction, the stations will require 33kw for operating lights and communication systems.
