Chennai Metro Rail – Delves Solar Power

Posted on: 09/Apr/2014 12:36:58 PM

Metro is looking for an alternative option of solar power for the run of its five stations on its air corridor. This plan is to get rid of the load on the power grid, said officials of the officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL).

As of now, we are having a making power of about 200 kilo-watt peak (kWp) only in these five stations and we ought to launch solar channels on the porch of these stations, said V. Somasundaram, Chief General Manager for Construction of CMRL.

Facilitating the solar power is highly efficient, because of their high switching effectiveness, said Dr. K. Srinivas Reddy, Professor for the Department of Mechanical Engineering of IIT Madras.

We deem to thrash solar energy along the rail tracks and also for the purpose of the regenerative braking system, stated the CMRL officials.

On attempting the regenerative braking system, the Chennai Metro Rail will be able to recuperate 30-35 % of the energy back.

During February, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has signed the Agreement for its solar power purchase with a multinational firm for its stations and hence a 500 kWp plant termed ‘Roof Top solar Power Plant’ have been launched at Dwarka station.

DMRC holds carbon credits in diminishing the green house gas and for its effort on pollution control.
