Commuters left risky without proper shelter in bus stands

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), wanting enough space for constructing the transit system, removed major bus shelters from various parts of the city including Anna Salai, 100 feet road, Poonamalle high road, etc. On completion of work, CMRL reconstructed shelters only at few places all of which were of very poor quality. These began falling down in very short time of construction. This has entirely left the passengers wait under the sun, facing drastic dehydration and sweat. The problem doesn’t end with it; it is risky to stand in open space without a proper shed!

The MTC bus drivers halt buses in the middle of the road and passengers in turn wait in the middle of road where two wheelers and other vehicles pass by at high speed. “It’s really risky and scary. Vehicles cross close to us and we’re left with no alternative option other than waiting in the middle of road under sun,” said a class-6 student on Anna Salai. There are few others seek for shady places under tree, but it is not the permanent solution anyway.
