Election Commission pleas to defer hike in gas price

Posted on: 25/Mar/2014 6:17:29 PM
Aiming to encourage investments in exploration for gas and boost the returns for state-run oil and natural gas corporations, the government, in 2013, almost doubled the gas prices. Political parties showed their dissatisfaction stating the hike in price was to satisfy the energy conglomerate Reliance, as the company had been insisting for a hike on account of expiry of its sales contract by March 31.

Further to all this, now, the Election Commission of India has put forward a plea to postpone the hike that is set for April 1. Aam Aadmi, India’s young anti-graft party has also put forth the same. The party has requested to put the decision on hold for now.

Additionally, petitions are also filed at the Supreme Court which will come for hearing on Tuesday. The Election commission has put forward its decision to defer the hike. A letter was posted on the commission’s website during late hours of Monday.
