Universal Account Numbers to ease PF claims

The Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) will start availing Universal Account Numbers (UAN) also called permanent account numbers by October 2014 for its 5 crore members widespread across the country. The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) is engaged in the work to carry out the mammoth exercise.
C-DAC is a premier and development organization functioning under the Ministry of Communications and Information technology. This is an exclusive division that takes care of R&D in IT, electronics and their related areas.
Provision of UAN is expected to eliminate the troubles that arise out of filing provident fund account transfer claims at times of job change. Further to the implementation of UAN system, new employees will not be provided with any separate PF account number. Those working in organized sectors like construction sector will find it beneficial to claim their PF even if they keep changing jobs.
