Chennai Stray Dog Vaccination: 86,489 Dogs Get Rabies Vaccine

The Greater Chennai Corporation has administered rabies vaccines to 86,489 stray dogs so far as part of its special vaccination camps across the city.

According to a statement issued by the Chennai Corporation, a major campaign to protect the public from rabies caused by dog bites began on August 11. As part of the campaign, rabies vaccines and medication to control internal and external parasites are being administered to stray dogs across Chennai.

The vaccination drive has been completed in all areas of the Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Tondiarpet, Madhavaram and Royapuram zones. Stray dogs in these areas were provided with rabies vaccinations as well as medication to control internal and external parasites.

The campaign is currently being carried out in the Ambattur, Anna Nagar and Alandur zones. Stray dogs in streets, educational institutions, hospitals and other locations across these zones are being covered under the programme.

The number of stray dogs vaccinated so far in each zone is as follows:

- Tiruvottiyur Zone – 12,313

- Manali Zone – 7,200

- Tondiarpet Zone – 12,477

- Royapuram Zone – 8,598

- Ambattur Zone – 18,627

- Madhavaram Zone – 16,956

- Anna Nagar Zone – 9,653

- Alandur Zone – 665

Together, 86,489 stray dogs have received rabies vaccinations so far.

Currently, 10 teams each are working in the Ambattur, Anna Nagar and Alandur zones to carry out the special vaccination campaign.

After the campaign is completed in these three zones, the vaccination drive will be extended to the Tiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Valasaravakkam, Adyar, Perungudi and Sholinganallur zones.

The Chennai Corporation plans to vaccinate around 2 lakh stray dogs across all zones within 39 working days. The dogs will also be provided with medication to control internal and external parasites as part of the campaign.
