Pongal bonanza: All ration card holders to get Pongal festival gift

The state government will be giving a Pongal gift to all ration card holders; The gift will cost more that than what was given last year.
During the year 2011, the then Chief Minister Mr. M. Karunananidhi provided half-kilo raw rice, half-kilo jiggery, 100grams green gram, 10 grams cashew nuts 5grams raisin, and 5 grams of cardamom. Nothing was given in the year 2012.
In the year 2013, following the failure of monsoon, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announce a Pongal gift costing Rs. 160/-. Accordingly, 1 kg raw rice, 1 kg sugar, and a cash of Rs. 100 were given costing the government Rs. 300 Crores.
For the year 2014, 1 kg raw rice, 2 kg sugar, and a cash of Rs. 200/- or more are being planned. Monsoon has failed this year as well. Accordingly, a gift bag of these items costing between Rs. 300/- and Rs. 600/- may be given to all ration card holders.
