Chennai Gets 750 New AC Electric Buses: CM Vijay to Launch Services Today

Chennai: Chief Minister Vijay will launch 750 new AC electric bus services in Chennai today (Tuesday) as part of the second phase of the city’s electric bus initiative.

The Chennai Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has already been operating 625 low-floor electric buses under the first phase at a cost of Rs. 697 crore. These buses are currently being operated from five depots - Vyasarpadi, Perumbakkam, Poonamallee, Central Depot and Tondiarpet-1 - with the aim of reducing environmental pollution in Chennai.

As part of the second phase, 750 new low-floor AC electric buses are planned to be operated from seven depots - Alandur, Central Depot-2, Perambur, Padiyanallur, Avadi, KK Nagar and Ayyappanthangal.

Of these, 130 AC electric buses will be operated initially from the Alandur depot. Chief Minister Vijay will inaugurate the electric bus services virtually from the Chennai Secretariat today.

In addition, Chief Minister Vijay will flag off five electric buses from the Chennai Secretariat premises.
