The transport department has warned the public that talking on the cellphones while driving vehicles will become punishable by cancelling the driving licence.
On the number of road
accidents over the last 10 years in different states, Tamil Nadu tops the list.
There have been 60,000 road accidents in the year 2012 in Tamil Nadu alone.
16,175 died. This statistic gives 8 accidents per hour and 44 die in road
accidents every day in Tamil Nadu.
There is a very
urgent need to take steps to reduce this high rate of accidents. Most accidents happen due to careless
driving. This is particularly so when the driver uses the cell phone while
driving. Stringent steps are being planned for drivers of whether 2-wheelers,
3-wheelers, 4-wheelers, buses and trucks to stop using mobiles while driving.
RTOs have been ordered to follow this.
At present
spot-checking is carried out for all vehicles. The check for drivers using
mobiles will be intensified. The driving licence will be cancelled (initially
for a period of 15 days). Based on the
check records over a period, further punishments are planned.
