Ahead of the reopening of schools in Tamil Nadu, the School Education Department has accelerated the distribution of free uniforms and educational materials to government school students across the state.

According to official data, nearly 71% of school uniform sets have already been distributed to districts, while about 94.91% of stitching work has been completed. The initiative is part of the Tamil Nadu government’s welfare schemes aimed at supporting students before the start of the 2026–27 academic year.

The Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation (TNTESC) provides free educational kits to students studying in government schools. These include:

- Free textbooks
- Notebooks
- School uniforms
- Footwear
- Atlas
- Crayons and colour pencils
- Geometry boxes
- Bicycles and other essentials

Officials stated that these materials are expected to be distributed before schools reopen on June 1, 2026.

The department also confirmed that printing of free textbooks for Classes 1–7 and 8–12 has been completed and books have already been dispatched to districts. Meanwhile, printing work for the newly revised syllabus for Classes 1–3 is still under progress, with around 48% of books already sent.

Education department officials have additionally instructed districts to:

- Ensure student enrolment under the Right to Education Act (RTE)
- Promote benefits of government schools to improve admissions
- Welcome students shifting from private schools
- Issue digital Transfer Certificates (TCs) through the EMIS portal for students completing Classes 5 and 8

The government has assured that all free educational kits will reach students on time for the new academic year.
