Cyclone Titva Moves Toward North Tamil Nadu; Red Alert Issued for Four Districts

The deep depression over Sri Lanka intensified into Cyclone Titva on Thursday and is moving towards North Tamil Nadu at a speed of 7 kmph.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur and Pudukkottai districts on Friday (Nov. 28) warning of very heavy rainfall.

The system over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining southeast Sri Lanka–Indian Ocean region intensified into a depression early on Thursday (Nov. 27). It later strengthened into Cyclone Titva while moving in a north-northwesterly direction over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka.

Following this, the storm continued to move towards the southwest Bay of Bengal, north Tamil Nadu and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts.

Rainfall Forecast

Thunderstorms and lightning are expected in:

- Many parts of South Tamil Nadu

- Some areas of North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal
from Friday (Nov. 28) to Dec. 3

According to IMD, Cyclone Titva has been moving north-northwest at 10 kmph over the past six hours and is currently located about:

440 km south-southeast of Puducherry

540 km south-southeast of Chennai

The system is likely to reach the southwest Bay of Bengal near the coasts of North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining South Andhra Pradesh by the early hours of Sunday (Nov. 30).

Heavy Rain Expected

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in:

Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram and Ranipet
on Sunday, the IMD said.
