Great news regarding the starting of operations at AIIMS Madurai!!
The upcoming Pongal festival in 2026 would be bringing double delight for the people belonging to Tamil Nadu. The reason for that is AIIMS in Madurai would start its operations from the Pongal festival onwards.
According to Dr. Hanumantha Rao, administrative officer of AIIMS, Madurai, it was clear that the medical college would operate from its Thoppur campus. For the students who have been admitted to AIIMS Madurai, the classes are currently being held at the medical college campus at Ramanathapuram.
In this scenario, Dr. Hanumantha Rao mentioned that the classes would be held at Madurai Thoppur medical college from Pongal 2026 onwards. It must be noted that a consultative meeting was held at the office at Thoppur regarding the work of AIIMS Madurai College and Hospital. Various important personalities who took part in the meeting were Mr. Manikam Tagore, MP, Virudhunagar, Rani Thirukumaran a MP from Tenkasi , Mr. Chandrasekaran, AIADMK Rajya Sabha MP plus few others.
Rented buildings have been taken due to the lack of adequate space at the Ramanathapuram medical college where the students admitted have been attending their classes.
After the consultative meeting, Dr. Hanumantha Rao spoke about how the construction work of AIIMS medical college in Madurai was nearing completion. He added that from the Pongal festival in January 2026 AIIMS medical college in Madurai would start operating in the new building. It is learnt that within these upcoming 6 months (that is from now till January 2026) all the arrangements for classes and a 120 bed hospital complex for doctors to treat patients would get completed. Information gathered is that all the necessary medical equipment would be purchased. Finally, he assured that by 2027 the construction of the entire facility would be completed.
It was brought out by Mr. Manickam Tagore, Virudhunagar MP that work has been going on with 1200 workers. Progress reports about the work progression would be provided every month by L & T. He spoke about how everybody is eagerly expecting AIIMS Madurai campus to start functioning in full steam. It must be recalled that on 21st May 2024, the construction works began at Thoppur in Madurai. Previously in the year 2019 itself Indian PM Mr. Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the AIIMS medical college in Madurai at a total project cost of Rs 2021.51 cr.
