Beach Cleanup on International Plastic Bag Free Day

More than 500 college students, Rotarians, and volunteers participated in a beach cleanup on International Plastic Bag Free Day.

Chennai, July 3, 2025 - In a remarkable display of environmental commitment, Rotary International District 3234 joined hands with over 500 college students from Queen Mary`s College to undertake a large-scale beach cleanup operation. This event, held at the Vinayagar statue immersion point at Foreshore Estate, coincided with International Plastic Bag Free Day.

Starting at 7:30 AM, rotarians and students enthusiastically participated in this initiative, working alongside the public to clear the beach of plastic waste and other debris.

"It`s encouraging to see young people showing such keen interest in environmental protection," said Rtn. AKS. Vinod Saraogi, District Governor, RI District 3234, who presided over the event.

Dr. B. Uma Maheswari, Principal of Queen Mary`s College, stated, "This large turnout demonstrates that the younger generation is well aware of the plastic pollution crisis. Today`s event not only cleaned our beach but also raised awareness about the harmful effects of plastic bags on our environment."

The event was attended by Nandakumar, Inspector of Police, Foreshore Estate, who praised the environmental initiative. "This kind of community engagement is very important for maintaining the cleanliness of our city and protecting our marine ecosystem," he said.

Upon completion of the event, participants collected over 500 kilograms of waste, significantly improving the condition of the beach.
