The health minister Mr. M. Subramanian grabbed many eyeballs yesterday when he spoke about how the immunity in the public in Tamil Nadu has increased up to 97%.
At the Teynampet Directorate of Public Health and Immunization in the DMS complex, the health minister made his presence felt yesterday and inaugurated a training seminar on treatment guidelines for complicated pregnancies. He spoke about how many measures have been taken to lower the maternal mortality rate and reduce the infant mortality rate. In 2021-22, the maternal mortality rate was 90.5 per one lakh births and it has been reduced to 39.4.
It must be noted that in 2020 when Coronavirus infection began spreading, a TN survey was conducted to know about the percentage of immunity in the public. Information gathered is that the public had 32% immunity in them and it decreased to 29% in 2021. Vaccinations were carried out for the Covid infection at that time. It was found out that 70% of the immunity was present in the population. The reason for that was due to dietary restrictions and exercises etc.
The survey was conducted in 4 phases and towards the end of 2021 it was found out that about 87% of the population had acquired immunity against the Covid infection. From as many as 1214 senior citizens, samples were taken and tested. The results showed 97% immunity in them.
The health minister mentioned that due to 97% immunity these mild Coronavirus infections spread would not cause harm for the public. Other important persons who made their presence felt were Principal Secretary of the department Mr. Senthil Kumar, director of national health commission Mr. Arun Thamburaj and directorate of dept of public health and immunisation Dr. T. Selvavinayagam plus few senior officials etc.
