The scorching summer appears to be bidding farewell as Tamil Nadu transitions into an unusually cooler May. According to the popular weather blog Tamil Nadu Weatherman, rain chances are increasing from today across North Tamil Nadu (NTN), including Chennai and surrounding KTCC regions (Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Chennai).
A Rare Summer Without a Heatwave
This year has been one of the most unique in recent memory. Not a single day in Tamil Nadu saw a heatwave, and Chennai has stayed below the 40°C mark throughout May — a rare occurrence observed only in 2004, 2018, and 2022 over the past 25 years.
Early Onset of East-West Shear Zone Brings Weather Excitement
Typically, a broad atmospheric circulation - part of the east-west shear zone - develops by late May or early June. However, this year marks the first time it`s forming in mid-May, signaling dynamic weather changes ahead. Such shear zones often lead to the formation of low-pressure systems, and this time both the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are expected to see systems forming by the end of the month.
The Arabian Sea system is projected to strengthen into a cyclonic storm within the next 10 days.
Rainfall Forecast for Today (May 16)
Many districts across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have high chances of rainfall today, including:
- North TN districts: Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Vellore, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Salem, Dharmapuri, Erode
- Central and coastal regions: Cuddalore, Villupuram, Perambalur, Kallakurichi, Trichy, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Karaikal, and Puducherry
