Dr. V. Shanta, a doyen of Oncology, has dedicated her entire life for the service of cancer patients is well known to us.
On Tuesday, 22rd of April 2025, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu Mr. M.K. Stalin grabbed the attention of many when he inaugurated a memorial hall at the famous Cancer Institute in Adyar in the honour of Dr. V. Shanta. It must be noted that Dr. V. Shanta was the former chairperson for the Cancer Institute (WIA) in Adyar.
At the WIA premises, the CM of TN uncovered a statue of Dr. V. Shanta and offered a floral tribute to her portrait. The occasion witnessed the presence of many important personalities like the chairman of the Cancer Institute WIA N.L. Rajah, director and CEO of Cancer Institute Dr. Kalpana Balakrishnan and the Director of The Hindu publishing group Mr. N. Ram plus a few others.
Important note about Dr. V. Shanta:
Dr. V. Shanta was born on 11th March 1927. It must be noted that her immediate grand uncle was Dr. Sir C. V. Raman and her uncle was Dr. Chandrasekhar. She could have aspired for different professions, but had a huge interest in the field of medicine. Till her death in the year 2021, she was the chairperson of the Cancer Institute in Adyar. It is superb to note that she had dedicated her entire life spanning over 50 years to the objective of organising care for the cancer patients, study of cancer, prevention and control etc. She was also responsible for producing many scientists and specialists in various aspects of oncological sciences.
Not many of us would know the fact that Dr. V. Shanta along with Dr. Krishnamurthi played a huge part in the development of the Cancer Institute from a cottage hospital of 12 beds to a major comprehensive cancer care centre of global recognition.
