Who would have imagined that one day the price of tomatoes would come down drastically?
Yes, this has happened now in markets across TN. In the months of July and August, some tomato farmers minted money and now they are shedding tears as the price of tomatoes have fallen from three digits to just single digit. The tomatoes were sold for Rs 2 to Rs 8 per kg in the famous Dharmapuri based Rayakottai market on Monday 11th September. This is the tomato hub of TN is known.
It was explained by Mr. NU. Rayappa, Rayakottai Farmers Union President said that Rayakottai market was the only place that fixes the price of tomatoes. Here, tomatoes from places like Karnataka, Kolkata, Gujarat, Coimbatore and Trichy etc get sorted out into 5 types and sold. Yesterday, the price of a 25 kg box was Rs 150 to Rs 320. It must be recalled that in August the price of a 25 kg box was Rs 4950. He spoke about how the price of tomatoes have fallen sharply now and how a kilo could be purchased for just Rs 2 to Rs 8 now.
In 2022, the incessant rains have affected the tomato yield and the price shot up abnormally. The lack of rains made the price of tomatoes come down. Mr. Rayappa explained that despite the drop in the prices of tomatoes the situation hasn`t yet worsened and there was no need to dump tomatoes. In Karnataka and in AP, the tomatoes were getting dumped as there were no buyers but in Rayakottai the situation was different.
