Skywalk connecting Kilambakkam bus terminus with railway station - Whats the latest?

Posted on: 09/Mar/2023 9:25:34 AM
To construct a skywalk connecting the new bus terminus at Kilambakkam and the suburban railway station, CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority would need to acquire 5 acre of land. It was also mentioned that in addition to the above additional 3 parcels of land would be needed to develop pick-up and drop-off points, emergency entry and exits and taxi stand near skywalk.

Mr. I. Jayakumar, special officer of CUMTA or Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority spoke about how they have written to CMDA to acquire the land parcels. For widening of GST Road with the service land in front of the bus terminal entry some minor land acquisition was also needed.

The pending civil works have been responsible for the delay in the operation of the new bus terminus at Kilambakkam. This bus terminus was constructed at a cost of Rs 393.7 crores. About 300 buses including SETC as well as MTC buses could be accommodated in the Kilambakkam bus terminus spread on 90 acres of land.

It is known to us that TN has been in talks to extend  Chennai metro airport link to Kilambakkam and that in the second phase itself. Mr. Jayakumar later hinted that talks have been going on in this regard and the Union government`s approval would be obtained. By 2025-26, access to metro rail would be provided. The unavailability of funds was the reason for non-starting of the extension works.

Chief minister of TN Mr. MK. Stalin chaired the first meeting of CUMTA and at the meeting an approval was given for the 15.5km stretch at a cost of Rs 4080 crores. It is superb to note that Kilambakkam would emerge as the next transport hub. In this aspect, a feasibility study has been planned on linking metro rails corridor- 3 between Madhavaram to Siruseri with Kelambakkam and Kilambakkam.
