Chennai is now making sensational news for the wrong reason!!

The shocking news that has come out is that the Cooum River flowing in Chennai is the most polluted river in the entire country. This was as per some reports from CPCB or Central Pollution Control Board. It must be taken into account that the number of polluted river stretches  in TN has increased to 10 in 4 years.

In 2019 and in 2021, the water quality of 12 rivers flowing in TN was checked at 73 locations. Truth is that 53 locations on 10 rivers were found non-complying to the prescribed water quality criteria for biochemical oxygen demand or BOD. This has been mentioned in the report from CPCB. The title of the report was Polluted River Stretches for Restoration of Water Quality, 2022.

Recently, the report brought out that 10 rivers in which the polluted stretches were identified were Adyar, Amravati, Bhavani, Cauvery, Cooum, Palar, Sarabanga, Tamiraparani, Thirumanimuthar and Vashista. Information collected is that the BOD in Cooum between Avadi to Sathya Nagar was 345mg per litre and this has been the highest among 603 rivers across the country.

In Gujarat, Sabarmati River has got BOD value of 292 mg per litre and in UP Bahela River has got BOD value of 287mg per litre. After the Cooum River, these 2 rivers are the next highly polluted rivers in India.

It is worthy to note that among the 10 polluted rivers flowing in the state Vashista in Salem has got a BOD of 230 mg per litre. Point to be noted is that the Adyar River (between Tambaram and Nandanam)  has a BOD value of 40mg per litre.
