A Surprising decision taken by GCC now- Residents confused!!

On Tuesday, 10th January 2023, many Chennai residents were taken by surprise after seeing messages from GCC asking them to link their ration card details with the property tax portal.
To simplify citizen services delivery, the ration card details are being collected to provide unique identifiers across databases and departments. This was according to the GCC Commissioner Mr. Gagandeep Singh Bedi.
He spoke about how this would help in the unified billing in the future where a single and unified bill could be generated for all the utility payments based on the ration card number. It is noteworthy that the citizens would be able to pay in one go and avoid logging into so many systems etc.
He added that if there was any change in the phone number of the citizen linked with the ration card, then it could be updated in the GCC database, Metro Water databases etc for seamless delivery.
Point is that providing the ration card number is not compulsory as of now and property tax payments could be made based on the Property ID. Many residents were confused regarding why GCC needs ration card numbers all of a sudden. There were some residents who thought that it was a fake message.
This move by the GCC to link ration card numbers with property tax has made many people think that it was done to eliminate bogus ration card holders. It was brought out by a resident that the GCC must conduct house to house surveys to eliminate bogus ration cards.
