This piece of news regarding Marina Beach might shock the residents of Chennai now!!
Point is that yesterday Marina Beach looked like a garbage dump yard and this was mainly due to the fact that huge piles of waste containing plastic and other items were washed ashore along the 3km stretch between Foreshore Estate and Broken Bridge.
Large patches of garbage at several locations along the beach shocked many visitors who walked along the coast near Adyar and Pattinapakkam etc. Near the sea shore, there were many plastic items like plastic bottles, plastic buckets, crates, tea and ice cream cups, food wrappers, liquor bottles, thermocol and gunny bags etc. A rag picker expressed his unhappiness and spoke about how creepers and stem plants would usually be present but now a lot of waste has been present.
Trash that has been dumped continuously in the Marina Beach has been washed to the shore as garbage now and this was mentioned by some experts of coastal pollution.
According to the scientist Dr. Paravakar Mishra of NCCR it was clear that the Adyar river mouth would be open now due to heavy water flow. He explained that the waste dumped in the river would be pushed into the sea.
The waste then gets washed to the shore as garbage and this happens especially in the monsoon season. In the coming days, a team from NCCR will be collecting samples and doing study.
It was mentioned by a senior official belonging to GCC that they were doing mass cleaning in many areas after the rains in Chennai. He hinted that special drives would take place to clean the beaches in the rainy season. For this, the officials from GCC have discussed with the Urbaser team. In the beach areas, the urbaser team has started the cleaning work.
