Cauvery breaches banks in Erode, 1300 evacuated

The Cauvery which was a bone-dry river has transformed into a flood carrier, breaching its banks and engulfing human habitations in several districts.
Water entered over 100 houses on the river bank in Erode and Bhavani. Around 1,300 people have been shifted to safer areas.
1.22 lakh cusecs of water were being released from Mettur dam to keep it safe. But the inflow, at 1.36 lakh cusecs, is more than the outflow.
The 16 sluice gates have been only half opened to avoid any mishaps downstream. However, if heavy inflow continues in the coming days, it will be forced to open them fully. The public have been advised to stay away from the river as there is heavy flow and high current.
