As per the latest data from NCRB or National Crime Records Bureau, it has been confirmed that in 2021 the number of crimes against children recorded a sharp increase of nearly 40% when compared to 2020. In 2021, the crime cases reported against the children was 6064 and it was 39.8% more than the crime cases against the children in 2020 which was 4338.
It must be taken into note that 4465 cases were booked under the POSCO or Protection of Children against Sexual Offences. It is really shocking to note that this was fourth in the entire India. As many as 69 kids were murdered and it included 3 who were sexually assaulted. Apart from 719 other crimes, there were 49 cases of procuration of minor girls. Information is that in Chennai there were 546 cases in 2021 and it has increased from 306 cases in 2020. It also included 435 POSCO cases in Chennai.
It was mentioned by Mr. John Roberts, Regional director (south) Child Rights and You that it was a highly worrying issue. Truth is that the rise in the number of crimes against children has been mainly due to the increase in reporting the cases. Inspite of TN government launching many programmes and schemes to protect the children the Coronavirus pandemic has made the children vulnerable and have exposed them to the predators.
Mr. John Roberts was of the opinion that at the systemic levels enough resources and budget must be allocated to implement and strengthen the child protection schemes and measures. It is important that in society everyone must realise their role and report crimes against children compulsorily.
People including parents and children associate sexual crimes with shame and just blame the victims only. This has been used by many perpetrators to their advantage. This was according to Shibi Ravichandran, a lawyer.
