Soon, the parking space in some of the metro stations in Chennai in phase-1 project would be increased and this has been planned by CMRL or Chennai Metro Rail limited.
In the metro stations like Koyambedu, Arumbakkam, Meenambakkam, St Thomas Mount, Little Mount, Mannady and Chennai airport, CMRL has been looking to increase the parking space.
It must be noted that only a handful of metro stations have last mile connectivity options like mini buses etc and majority of the commuters depend on the 2 wheelers or 4 wheelers to travel to the stations.
According to an official belonging to CMRL, for passengers in suburban localities like Pallavaram, Chromepet, Chitlapakkam and Tambaram etc, Chennai airport is the closest metro station.
There is only a minimum parking facility available at the airport metro station and many go to Meenambakkam to park their vehicles. Finding parking space has been challenging for many commuters in both airport stations as well as in the Meenambakkam station.
Additional parking space has been requested by CMRL from AAI or Airports Authority of India for parking at the Chennai airport. Stretching the parking space has been going at Meenambakkam also.
Point to be noted is that metro stations in places like St Thomas Mount, Little Mount and Mannadi etc have 4000 passengers and these stations have lesser parking space. Passengers have been making requests for more parking spaces to park their vehicles in these metro stations in Chennai. Lands have been identified now near these metro stations to cater to the parking facilities.
