Posted on: 27/Aug/2022 9:59:39 AM
It is very challenging for the transport department to run the buses in ever increasing traffic in Chennai. It must be noted that until 20 years back the intercity buses operated from Broadway which is a highly congested area. To control the traffic congestion in Broadway, on 37 acres of land a new bus terminus was constructed in Koyambedu and an amount of Rs 103 crores was spent for the construction.

This new bus terminus at Koyambedu began functioning from 2022 onwards and about 5lakh passengers use this bus terminal everyday to reach their destinations. This Koyambedu bus terminus functions as an integrated bus terminal and it fulfills the transportation requirements of the passengers.

It has got several features like city bus stand plus parking lot and omni bus stand close by. It is known to us that a new bus terminus is being built at Kilambakkam near Vandalur at a cost of Rs 314 crores on 67 acres of land.

In the Kilambakkam bus terminus, there is not only parking space available for 250 buses, 270 cars and 3500 2-wheelers etc but also a bus station spread on 6 acres. Now, the construction works have been going in full flow and nearly 90% of the work is over. It is learnt that the terminus for city buses is nearing completion and express bus stand works are in the final stages.

After the completion of the construction works, MTC buses will be operated from Kilambakkam bus terminus and consultation has been going on now regarding this. Point is that 50% of the buses would run to and from Kilambakkam in the future. This was brought out by some higher officers belonging to the transport department.

The officials have mentioned that every day as many as 400 arrive and depart from Koyambedu bus terminus. From Koyambedu, nearly 354 express buses, 1234 buses from Villupuram Transport Corporation and 134 buses from Kumbakonam Transport Corporation and 2000 buses from various transport corporations are being operated.

It has been decided that 50percent of intercity buses would operate from the new bus terminus at Kilambakkam. Buses to places like Trichy, Madurai, Salem, Coimbatore, Kanniyakumari etc would be operated from Kilambakkam.

As many as 300 MTC buses would be operated from the Kilambakkam new bus terminus. Places in Chennai such as Tambaram, Guindy, Koyambedu, Poonamallee, Avadi, Broadway etc would be covered by these MTC buses from Kilambakkam.
