Beginning from 1st of September 2022, user fees would be revised at 28 toll plazas under the control of NHAI in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is known that toll plaza is a booth present on the toll road where the user must stop and pay their toll tax amount to drive further
It must be noted that this revision of user fees would be there for a time of 1 year. In TN, there are 50 toll plazas on the National Highways is well known. From 1st of April the rates of the remaining toll plazas are revised every year. Based on WPI or wholesale price index, annual revision is being done. Here, 2 percent increase is fixed and the rest is calculated based on the index.
As the concessionaires do not make any profit in the first 10 years of operation, the revision of fees was very much needed. This was as per a toll operator. He then shed light on the fact that the road would have to be renewed every 4 years whether the road was damaged or in good condition. It would cost 40percent of the original cost.
Information is that medians would have to be painted plus install cat eyes and lay road shoulders etc. The salaries of the employees would have to be paid also. In addition, power bills of street lights at service lanes, bridges, urban stretches etc would have to be paid too.
It is noteworthy that the truckers and transporters want the toll plazas to be removed as it consumes time and the process of paying toll fee was cumbersome.
It was pointed out by some industry sources that efforts have been going on to introduce a GPS based system by which toll plazas could be removed. At present, a trial run is going on and in another 2 years toll plazas would be removed.
