Frequent release of toxic gases in north Chennai has been creating lots of problems to the residents.

It is known that there are several industrial units located in north Chennai and frequently toxic gases get released from these industries. The residents belonging to places like Thiruvottiyur, Manali and Ennore have been finding it very difficult. For the past few years there were many complaints from the residents of north Chennai regarding the health problems that they have been facing. This has been due to the fact that the pollution control measures have failed to bring respite for the residents.

Many people have breathing issues and lung related ailments etc in north Chennai and the health centres have been witnessing sharp increase in the number of such patients. There are many residents in north Chennai who are concerned about the inhalation of ammonia gas as it might result in carcinogenic infections.

After the Covid-19 lockdowns were relaxed, many persons have been visiting the pulmonology department of Stanley Medical College and Hospital for treatment. It was later explained by a senior medical officer that there is a steady increase in asthma, wheezing and lung based infections. Point to be noted is that those patients who visit SMCH were mostly from north Chennai and its nearby places. He threw light on how there has been a slight increase in the infections due to poor air quality and the situation was not alarming.

According to a resident belonging to Ennore, the industries were not following norms issued by the concerned department. He added that the residents suffer from breathing issues and cough due to inhalation of toxic gases.

It is shocking to mention here that for more than decade Sulphur gas has been released from the industries and this has led to skin allergies and lung infections.
