Connecting Tidel Park with Thiruvanmiyur railway station, there is a foot over bridge or FOB on OMR in Chennai. The surprising piece of news is that this FOB has been dismantled temporarily now to construct twin U shaped flyovers. The proposed structure was on the way and hence the decision to dismantle and redesign the elevated pathway was taken.
It must be taken into note that the steel FOB totally had 3 arms with one arm on the railway station. The other 2 arms slide down to connect MTC bus stop and Ramanujam IT city.
As per a senior official from TNRDC, the third arm of the FOB lands exactly at the same place where the ramp of the proposed U shaped flyover ends. He hinted that the TNRDC would change it to a L shaped structure as it would be easier and safer for pedestrians. At present, works with respect to Chess Olympiad are being given lots of preference and therefore the above said conversion to help the pedestrians would take 3 to 5 months of time.
Constructed at an amount of Rs 9 crores, the steel structure allowed employees at Ramanujam IT City or TIdel Park to cross easily over the 4-lane OMR and reach MRTS station. The official data has made it clear that nearly 70000 persons not only from the IT Park but also from the IIT M Research Park and MGR Film City used this elevated walkway on a daily basis.
In Chennai, there is FOB in several places but the FOB here is different as it had escalators and it was well lit. By this, jaywalking and pedestrian accidents have been reduced in the stretch. Now again the pedestrians would have to walk all the way to the traffic signal controlled junction to cross the busy OMR.
