A superb piece of information regarding the elevated 4 lane corridor in Chennai has emerged now!!
For constructing a new elevated 4- lane corridor from Port to Maduravoyal in Chennai at a cost of Rs 3935 crores, NHAI or National Highways Authority of India has invited bids now. It is known that a decade back the work on the project stopped.
The works would be completed in 30 months and the construction work on 20.223km project work would be taken up in 4 packages. Truth is that the work came to standstill in 2012 due to issues regarding flow of water on Cooum. For the exclusive usage of the Chennai port, the project was revived. It is noteworthy that NHAI came up with a new proposal for a double tier elevated road with an upper tier mostly for port vehicles and lower tier for local vehicles. As per NHAI the road would be double tier between Port and Koyambedu for the non port vehicles and there would be 7 entries and exits.
The vehicles can enter through Sivananda Salai, West Cooum River Road, Binny Road, College Road and exit at Anna Arch Road and Koyambedu. This would be in the Port to Maduravoyal route. The vehicles can enter Koyambedu, Anna arch Road, Spurtank Road South Cooum Road Gandhi Irwin Salai and Kamarajar Salai. This would be in the Maduravoyal to Port route.
There would be 3 cable-stayed bridges at Napier Bridge, over Koyambedu Bridge, Chennai Metro rail and Maduravoyal grade separator.
